are there any sites online that offer free obituary and birth record searches?

I have been trying to do research on my family tree. But it seems that every site I try to use to look for these records claims to be free but in reality they require you to become a paying member in order to view any results. Are there any truly free sites out there that offer this service?

Your best bet is to search for a specific state or county page. West Virginia, for example, has a great collection of original scanned documents available for free.
